5 Steps to Prevent Diverticulitis Flare-Ups

Diverticulitis can be an intimidating and painful experience, and we're here to help simplify some factors.*

*Please note, Diverticulitis is something that is best assisted with a Dietitian who is trained in that field. If you are needing support through this, contact your GP and consider seeing a Dietitian to assist you.

Now, let's move onto to breaking down the 5 steps!

1. Reduce Inflammation

- Include Omega 3 fats (e.g. avocado, fish, seafood, chia seeds, walnuts)

- Reduce intake of Omega 6 fats (e.g. vegetable oil, sunflower oil, processed foods, soybean)

- Eliminate saturated fats (e.g. cream, butter, meat fat, pies, biscuits)

- Keep plenty of fresh vegetables in your diet for fibre and antioxidants

2. Mucosal Healing Nutrition

- Consume home-made bone broth (1 cup x3 times a week)

- Take probiotics

- Eat foods containing prebiotics (e.g. kombucha, sauerkraut tofu)

3. Optimal Gut Transit Time

- Consume 30g fibre daily (e.g. seeds, vegetables, legumes, bran)

- Reduce red meat intake at night meals to twice a week

- Increase fish consumption to 4 times per week

4. Physical Activity

- This keeps the bowel moving

-Follow guidelines of 30mins of activity on 5 or more days per week

- See your Exercise Physiologist for a program specifically for you

5. Reduce Stress

- Reduce both emotional and mental stress

- This is a huge key in achieving total relief of symptoms and optimal functionality of your gut!
