Medicare 1st July 2025 Allied Health Referral Changes
Changes to Medicare Allied Health Referrals from 1 July 2025
From 1 July 2025, there have been changes to how GPs refer patients to Allied Health professionals like Dietitians, Exercise Physiologists, and Diabetes Educators. These referrals are now called GP Chronic Conditions Management Plan (GPCCMP) referrals.
If you’ve previously received a referral under an EPC or care plan, this is simply the updated version, the number of visits hasn’t changed, but the way the referral is written and submitted may be different.
We Still Bulk Bill
We want to reassure you that we continue to bulk bill most Medicare-eligible appointments under GPCCMP referrals. This means there is generally no out-of-pocket cost as long as you have a valid referral from your GP.
However, some of our Senior Clinicians may charge a gap fee, so it’s a good idea to check when booking your appointment.
You’re Still Entitled to 5 Medicare-Supported Visits Each Year
Just to clarify—there is no change to the number of visits. You are still entitled to five Medicare-subsidised Allied Health visits per calendar year, and this total is shared across all Allied Health providers.
For example:
If you see a Dietitian twice, a Diabetes Educator once, and an Exercise Physiologist twice, that’s your five for the year.
If you’ve used any visits at other clinics earlier this year, those will count toward your total.
Under the new type of referral, you can also use all your 5 visits with the 1 allied health professional of your choosing
There is still a maximum of five visits per calendar year, regardless of how many different Allied Health professionals you see.
Not Sure How Many Visits You’ve Used?
If you’re unsure how many of your five Medicare-supported visits you’ve already used this year, there are two easy ways to check:
1. Through MyGov (Online)
Visit my.gov.au
Log in or create an account
Make sure your Medicare account is linked
Click on Medicare, then go to History or Claims History
You’ll see a list of your past appointments and can check which ones were billed under your GPCCMP referral
2. Call Medicare
Phone: 132 011
Ask: “Can you tell me how many of my five Medicare Allied Health visits I’ve used this calendar year?”
This is the best way to stay on top of it and avoid any surprises when booking.
GPs Now Use Simple Referral Letters
There’s no longer a fixed referral form or EPC template. GPs now simply provide a referral letter. It should include your name, your health condition, which Allied Health service you’re being referred to, and the number of visits being requested.
It doesn’t matter who the referral is written out to, you can choose your preferred provider within our team. For example, if your referral says “Dietitian,” you’re welcome to see any Accredited Practising Dietitian in our team, even if the letter names a specific practitioner. The same applies for Exercise Physiology and Diabetes Education.
We’re also happy to work directly with your GP clinic if they need assistance.
It's Up to You to Track Your 5 Visits
Because Medicare limits you to five Allied Health visits per calendar year, it’s important to keep track of how many you’ve used and who you’ve seen.
Medicare doesn’t send reminders, so a quick check through MyGov, a phone call to Medicare, or asking our team can help keep you informed.
Please note: If all five of your Medicare-subsidised visits have already been used and we provide a service under the assumption of eligibility, you will be responsible for the full cost of that appointment. For full details, please see our booking terms at:
